My Story

Vera Fonseka is a Portuguese-Russian contemporary artist with a background in psychology. Born in 1982 in Tallinn, in the former USSR (now Estonia), Vera grew up in a family of actors, which exposed her to the world of arts from an early age. In 2003, she moved to Portugal, where she has been living ever since.

Vera Fonseka's Art

For Vera, art is not just a craft but a higher purpose: to show people the beauty of simple things. In her works, she incorporates all of her rich cultural background, resulting from a life immersed in three distinct cultures – Russian, Estonian, and Portuguese. This cultural blend is a true treasure trove of ancestral knowledge.

Vera classifies her paintings as a performance of color and the human condition. She uses colors unabashedly, portraying the human condition with all its contrasts. The unconscious, the masculine and the feminine, as well as the human need for fetishes to escape routine, are projected in the use of the mandala on her canvases – the "ideal circle" that she distorts and shapes to current societal trends.

Inspired by Kandinsky, Frank Stella, Beatriz Milhazes, and Alexandra Mir, Vera Fonseka strives to make a conceptual contribution to Contemporary Art.

Artist Statement

"My main goal is to combine many layers, each of them as a unique personality, in an explosion of colors, distorted images of mandalas, elements of pop culture, and exotic weapons."
